For those of you who don’t know me, I consider myself an “agnostic atheist.” That is, I don’t believe in God, but I’m not willing to outright state that a higher being doesn’t exist. I was raised Catholic but gave up practicing years ago (which will explain my viewpoints in this blog being from a perspective of Christian faith and beliefs). I’m not ignorant enough to claim that I know the universe well enough to state that it’s impossible for a higher power to exist or that one didn’t create the universe. On the other hand, based upon all of the scientific evidence that I’ve read and learned, I don’t believe that God exists and I definitely don’t believe in any of the versions of “God” that are worshipped by any of the major religions throughout the world today.
That being said, in my daily research for my Twitter page I’ve recently come across a couple of sad and disturbing articles located here and here and here related to how certain individuals are using the supposed “law of God” to justify their hatred and intolerance of homosexuals and the LGBT community as a whole. I’m not so much alarmed by the nature of their hatred (it’s human nature to dislike and not trust things that we don’t know or understand), but the fact that they’re so solely focusing their insistence on upholding the “law of God” against said individuals as opposed to the other “laws of God.” The last time I checked, there are Ten Commandments:
I am the Lord, your God
Thou shall bring no false idols before me
Do not take the name of the Lord in vain
Remember the Sabbath and keep it holy
Honor thy father and thy mother
Thou shall not kill/murder
Thou shall not commit adultery
Thou shall not steal
Thou shall not bear false witness against your neighbor
Thou shall not covet your neighbor’s wife (or anything that belongs to your neighbor)
So the question I have to ask is, if people are so strung up on upholding the “law of God” when it comes to homosexuality (which, ironically, isn’t included in the list above), why aren’t thousands of religious individuals protesting outside of football games on Sunday for those who don’t go to church? Why aren’t there daily protests outside of our state and national capitals to make adultery a crime punishable by “ten years hard labor” in reference to one of the articles previously referenced?
Is this really about upholding the “law of God” or more about selectively fighting for what values people choose to fight for? Why don’t we see people of faith raising as much hell in the media over such issues as murder, theft and adultery as they do about homosexuality? I’m not going to pull up statistics to show that there is an epidemic of violence and infidelity across our country; that should be well known if you follow the national news at all.
Oh, and we almost forgot the Greatest Commandment: “Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind” and “Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself.” Why is there so much hatred, anger and effort to punish those in the LGBT community, whose only “crime” is loving another human being in a way that is against the values and beliefs of people whose business it is none of anyway? If God is supposed to judge sinners when we die, why are human beings so judgmental and looking to punish now? Aren’t we supposed to have “free will” to sin and be punished in the afterlife?
I fully respect people’s beliefs to do whatever they want as long as they don’t cause harm to themselves or others. What I DON’T respect is the ignorance, apathy and hatred that goes into many religions trying to forcibly inflict their values on people whose life choices are none of their business.
On that note, GOD, GET YOUR ASS DOWN HERE! No, seriously… if you do exist (in the form that billions of people believe that you do) PLEASE return to Earth and clarify exactly why you would allow millions upon millions of individuals to be born with homosexual drives and other sexual orientations beyond just “one man and one woman.” Also, if you could, explain why they should be punished both here and in the afterlife for a sexual orientation that is, as I believe, beyond their control?
We’re all waiting…
