When you think of sex toys, board and card games aren’t usually the first things to come to mind. Brian Pellham is looking to change that perception through his company, Kheper Games. Kheper Games offers a rapidly expanding variety of adult-oriented products, such as their signature line of sex games, along with a variety of other products themed for ladies’ night, bachelorette parties and even a line of “weed” themed merchandise.
C.J. Asher – First of all, thank you for this interview Brian. To start, tell me a little about yourself.
Brian Pellham – I’m forty-three years old and I graduated from the Wharton School of Business with a B.S in Economics in 1994.
C.J. Asher – How did you first decide to venture into the adult novelty market?
Brian Pellham – I started by writing a drinking games book in 1994 and learned, a few years after self-publishing, that the adult market was a great fit for this item. Then, I wrote more adult games books and, eventually, in 2000 starting producing board, card and dice games as well.
C.J. Asher – Why did you choose to go with games, specifically board games, when first starting the company?
Brian Pellham – We started with books as Kheper Publishings and expanded to games – many ideas were from the books – in 2000. For the book, I wrote the first one as I had a friend who went to work for a New York publisher. She was supposed to co-author but didn’t write her half, so I wrote the entire book. Drinking games was a topic we both knew about and I had wanted to get it into Spencer Gifts, which I did in 1999.
C.J. Asher – In the age of rapidly expanding technology and our reliance on smart phones, why do you think board games still have their appeal?
Brian Pellham – Our party are social and you just can’t get the social element from a phone. For romance games also, a phone is too impersonal for a couple to use for an intimate experience.
C.J. Asher – Why is your company named “Kheper Games”?
Brian Pellham – The “Kheper” is a scarab beetle in Egyptian Culture. I also used to sell Egyptian Art and Jewelry at a holiday kiosk and gift fares. With the drinking game book, I had published also a book “Egyptian Symbols and Their Meanings”. The Kheper meant “good luck for life” so it stuck to me as a good meaning for a business name.
C.J. Asher – Tell me a bit about the romance products you sell.
Brian Pellham – We sell a wide range of games and kits for couples. Our focus is on improving relationships and intimacy. We offer many simple concepts, such as dice games, card games and scratch tickets. Then we also have board games, boxed sets, etc. for the customer looking for many ideas in one kit. We cover the full range of what any couple could be looking for and we improve relationships in a fun way by presenting techniques and creative romantic suggestions in a fun non-offensive game format.
C.J. Asher – What’s the most successful/profitable romance product in your line?
Brian Pellham – Our line of Sex! games. We have a Sex! Card Game, Dice Game, Scratch Tickets, Board Game, and Coupons. All items in the set offer unique sex positions.
C.J. Asher – Where do you come up with the inspiration for new products?
Brian Pellham – Often from trade shows and meeting with customers. Some are gaps I see when I review what stores carries, ideas or suggestions from stores or distributors as to what people are looking for or things that we realize are not out there yet. For example, our Massage Seductions Kit was created because we noticed there were no widely available products on the market that offered sensual massage techniques in a kit format.
C.J. Asher – Are your board game products mostly used by couples or groups?
Brian Pellham – Romance games are mostly for couples, but Let’s F*ck! and Let’s Fool Around can scale up to be played with more players. Our line of party games is meant for groups as are the Ladies Night and bachelorette party games and novelties.
C.J. Asher – In addition to board games, you also sell a variety of other adult-themed products, such as canteens and bachelorette items. Tell me about these products.. what are some of your more popular ones?
Brian Pellham – Our line of cups does really well, such as the Disco Ball Cup. We recently expanded this line to include a TNT Cup, Grenade Canteen, Watermelon Cup and Cactus Cup. We also carry several types of shot glass sets, with our Test Tube Shooters being the most popular. For bachelorettes, we carry a wide range of games, drinkware and novelties for bachelorette parties. Our most popular item is the Ladies Night Card game. It’s part of our Ladies Night range that works for any type of female get together, such as divorce parties, bachelorette parties, birthdays, home parties, etc.
C.J. Asher – Where can people go to buy your products retail?
Brian Pellham – http://www.khepergames.com includes a “Where to Buy” section that offers links. All adult stores carry our products, as do many mall store chains.
C.J. Asher – I noticed a line of weed-inspired products on your site. What made you decide to diversify your product line from adult novelty products?
Brian Pellham – We focus on games and entertainment for adults, so weed games fit right in. Weed-themed games are increasing in popularity as many more states continue to legalize usage.
C.J. Asher – What feedback have you received from your customers?
Brian Pellham – Customers in general really appreciate our products. Romance game customers like that they can use a “fun game” to address things lacking in their relationships. Our party games we often receive emails about how much fun people have with them. In general, the feedback is very positive.
