Taken from the name of the 4th century Indian text on lovemaking, Kama Sutra has been providing quality intimacy enhancement oils, lubricants and other products for nearly fifty years now. I met National Sales Manager Paul Reutershan at the 2016 ANME show, and am happy to have him here to tell us a little more about Kama Sutra’s award-winning product line.
C.J. Asher – First of all, thanks for this interview! Tell us a little about yourself, Paul
Paul Reutershan – I am fifty, I was born in Washington, D.C., I went to Frostburg State University located in western Maryland and studied Business Administration. I am married and have two daughters, Emma and Sophia.
C.J. Asher – What is your title and role with Kama Sutra?
Paul Reutershan – I am the National Sales Manager for the adult market in the USA, and my role is to handle our distribution partners and direct retail chains. I facilitate sales by providing product knowledge and trainings to our customers, and I also look for new opportunities.
C.J. Asher – Tell me about Kama Sutra and the products you sell.
Paul Reutershan – Kama Sutra was started in 1969 with our original Oil of Love. We are truly a lifestyle company that has built a reputation on providing quality body products that are all made in the USA. Our best selling products are our Massage Oils, Oils of Love, Massage Candles, and Honey Dust.
C.J. Asher – What first made you decide to work in the adult novelty industry?
Paul Reutershan – I got into the business back in 1998 by chance. A friend of a friend knew the owner of some adult stores. I had spent seven years working in specialty retail with Warner Brothers Studio Stores, and was looking to venture out into other areas. I ran two stores and our web fulfillment operation for three years before leaving to work for a distributor.
C.J. Asher – How has working in your industry impacted your personal and professional life? Do family and friends know what you do and are they supportive of it?
Paul Reutershan – I really have had no issues, and I feel it’s been 90% positive. Sure, there have been people who at first may be apprehensive, but once I get the opportunity to explain the industry to them, the guard drops and they start to ask lots of questions. All my friends and family know what I do, and they all want samples (laughs).
C.J. Asher – What’s the most stressful part of your job?
Paul Reutershan – Making sure customers continue to buy our products. Retail is very fluid and more competitive than ever. I make sure to stay in constant contact with our customers to make sure sales are happening. There is no yesterday when you are in sales, only today and the future.
C.J. Asher – What’s your best-selling product, and what makes it so popular?
Paul Reutershan – Our Coconut Pineapple Oil Of Love has really shown tremendous growth. It’s done well because it really tastes true to the flavor, and the benefit that it warms on contact with the skin and gets even warmer when you gently blow or kiss the product.
C.J. Asher – Who is your typical client base?
Paul Reutershan – Our current demographic are women and couples in the thirty to seveny year old range. We are working on some new things to broaden our appeal to a younger audience.
C.J. Asher – How do you feel that novelty items help couples to enhance their sexual activity and their relationships?
Paul Reutershan – We all need to spice things up. Whether it’s going to dinner, vacationing, or trying a massage oil, it’s all about bringing something new and fresh to your relationship. Kama Sutra is a great way to introduce adult products due to the approachability and quality.
C.J. Asher – Where can customers go to purchase your products?
Paul Reutershan – Most adult brick and mortar and web retailers carry our full line.
C.J. Asher – What’s the hottest trend in adult novelty products right now?
Paul Reutershan – Customers are so much more knowledgeable these days. Materials and ingredients need to be body safe. Rechargeable products continue to be on the rise, taking over the traditional battery operated devices.
C.J. Asher – What sets your company apart from other companies in the adult novelty market?
Paul Reutershan – We have been in the game for forty six years, and Kama Sutra is a “Coca Cola-brand,’ in the industry due to our longevity and consistent quality. Our products are all made in the USA, which is very important to consumers.
C.J. Asher – What are your favorite industry-related events?
Paul Reutershan – ANME and XBIZ have been great for us. I have also found distributor open houses and events provide fantastic face time with a variety of clients I may not be able to travel to see regularly.
C.J. Asher – What new and exciting products do you have coming out in the near future?
Paul Reutershan – I wish I can say more, but I took an oath of secrecy. We will have some really big surprises launching at ANME.
C.J. Asher – Tell me some of the compliments you’ve received from your customers.
Paul Reutershan – In general, most of my customers say that they appreciate my attention to detail and respectful follow up. I know how busy people are running their businesses, so I make a sale on the schedule they give me, not by being pushy or desperate. I love the sales people who do it that way, as it makes my life easier and more productive (laughs).
C.J. Asher – What nominations and awards have you received?
Paul Reutershan – We won Sensual Bath and Body Product of the Year from XBIZ in January for our Lover’s Travel Kit.
