C.J. Asher interview Horror Show Jack, Fangsmith

10565129_669757829769131_8960329507294638738_nWhen people think of kinky novelty items at adult entertainment, the first things that usually come to mind are leather and latex products. Imagine my surprise when, at this year’s EXXXOTICA Edison 2016, I was lucky enough to meet Horror Show Jack, who specializes in making customized, high-quality fangs for his clients.

C.J. Asher – First of all, thanks for this interview! Tell us a little about yourself…

Horror Show Jack – Well, I’m thirty-nine years old, I grew up in Oakland, NJ and now I live in Clifton, NJ. I went to Indian Hills High School and graduated in 1996… ugh, I feel old. I attended Bergen Community College, where I majored in mass media radio, TV and recording. And here I am, twenty-one years later, making fangs, horror show bears and horror décor, which I’m known for internationally.

C.J. Asher – Tell us about the types of customized fangs that you sell.

Horror Show Jack – I have about forty different styles from the basic canines, True Blood, Underworld, Lost Boys, Salem’s Lot and I have my own set, the “HSJ Special:” it’s twenty individual fangs, a full mouth set.

C.J. Asher – What first made you decide get into this line of work?

Horror Show Jack – I got tired of purchasing sets from other fang makers and them breaking shortly after getting them. So, I was forced to learn. I showed the fangs to my dentist, he told me what the they are made of, he taught me a few tricks and I took it and went with it. It started as a hobby, then people started offering me money for me to make them a set. And – seventeen years later – I’m self employed and people say I’m one of the best in the business. I’m just a guy trying to make my way in the world.

20170207_232647C.J. Asher – What are your fangs made of and tell us about the creation and customization process.

Horror Show Jack – My fangs are made from dental acrylic, the same thing false teeth are made of. It’s what dentists use. I take an impression of your teeth, then pour a mold and make the fangs from the mold. So, the fangs will only fit you and you alone.

C.J. Asher – Besides fangs, what other horror-themed merchandise do you create and sell?

Horror Show Jack – I make horror show bears and other twisted creations. I sell prints my girlfriend and business partner draws and other art she creates.  I also sell Godzilla figures and collectables.

C.J. Asher – What’s your best-selling product, and what makes it so popular?

Horror Show Jack – The Fangs, hands down. All the basic styles and movie replicas and customized sets. And the Bears are very popular. What makes me popular… I guess it’s the many different shows I do. The great friends I’ve made thru the years as word gets around. I don’t stop till my customers are satisfied. And a movement started years ago in which I earned the nickname “Fang Maker to the Stars.” I’ve made fangs for over 300 celebrities from people like Kane Hodder, John Kassim, Michael Rooker, Tia Carrera, Vern Troyer and many more. If you told me ten years ago, not only would I be making fangs for people I grew up watching but also calling them friends, I wouldn’t have believed it.

20170207_195644C.J. Asher – Who is your typical client base?

Horror Show Jack – Everyone and anyone; this is a 24/7 job. I’ll be playing Mortal Kombat X on my phone at 2:00am and get an email or Facebook message – fang related – and thus the ball starts rolling.

C.J. Asher – What sets your business apart from other companies that sell fangs and other horror items?

Horror Show Jack – I’m going to every convention I can get into… my prices and my products quality. When you come to my booth or my home, you’re not just a customer you are horror family. And I almost forgot the stars at the shows have my fangs and tell people to come to me.

C.J. Asher – What are your favorite industry-related events, such as adult novelty, tattoo, horror and others?

Horror Show Jack – Wow… I have so much fun at all of them. I’ll start with EXXXOTICA, that is such a fun, well organized show and easy in easy out… everyone is so nice and I’ll give a shout out to Joanna Angel and the Burning Angels, a lot of the girls came and got fangs from me plus many of the other stars like Katie Morgan and Lexi Belle always comes a buys an evil Rabbit so I always make sure I have a few made. Other shows like The Macabre Fair film fest, The Philly Tattoo Convention, Monster Mania, Horrorhound, Mad Monster Party, Scares That Care, Walker Stalker and the Gwarbq… I enjoy most of the shows I do.

Horror Show Jack – I’ll be stepping up the quality of the Bears and horror props are in the works.

C.J. Asher – Tell us some of the compliments you’ve received from your customers.

Horror Show Jack – The best phrases I hear are “Thank you,” “Oh my God, I’m in love” and “Thank you for giving me my smile back!” I also make costume cover ups: it’s the same thing a dentist does, but it’s not a permanent fix. I’ve made costume denturee caps and flippers for people who do not have dental insurance; I’m the cost-efficient alternative for those people.

C.J. Asher – What social media sites can your customers follow you at?

Horror Show Jack – https://www.facebook.com/HorrorShowJackFangSmith and just search “Horror Show Jack” on Instagram and Twitter.
